Diego Axel Márquez, an industrial and systems engineering student at the Tec’s Querétaro campus, has made history by becoming the first Mexican to receive two prestigious awards from the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE).

The IISE is an international non-profit organization which leads industrial and systems engineering training, education, and research and development.

This student was awarded the Vinod & Gail Sahney Scholarship and the IISE Council of Fellows Undergraduate Scholarship, both of which are awarded annually by the institute in recognition of outstanding academic performance and leadership in the field.

The Vinod & Gail Sahney scholarship covers the expenses associated with attending the Institute’s prestigious annual conference, which will take place in the city of New Orleans, United States, between May 20 and 23, 2023.

The IISE Council of Fellows Undergraduate Scholarship is awarded to outstanding university students with strong leadership skills and provides them with financial support to be able to continue their studies.

Diego mentioned that it was very important to accompany technical proposals with social, human, and societal benefits in order to present a well-rounded profile to win the awards.

“I think the biggest challenge is to continue persevering and being academically disciplined, while balancing that with time for sports and a social and cultural life.”

“I’m always seeking to develop my soft skills so I will have a complete and well-rounded profile”, Diego commented.

IISE at Tec de Monterrey

The Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE) has an active presence at Tec de Monterrey’s Querétaro campus through its Student Chapter.

This chapter is dedicated to organizing events and providing courses and training to Industrial and Systems Engineering students with the aim of promoting their personal and professional development.

As secretary of the IISE Student Chapter at Tec de Monterrey, Diego has led several initiatives to achieve these objectives.

The student has been able to learn about various opportunities related to his field of study thanks to the support and recommendations of the Student Chapter and the Department of Industrial Engineering.

As a result, Diego is grateful to the entire Industrial Engineering Department and to IISE for the support and guidance they have provided throughout his university studies.

A well-rounded Tec student

Diego Márquez is a well-rounded Tec de Monterrey student, who stands out both in academic and extracurricular activities. He has maintained an average grade of 99.1 since the start of his studies, which has earned him recognition at academic excellence ceremonies organized by the institution.

Diego has also participated in various programs and activities that have contributed to his holistic development.

As a seventh generation Leader of Tomorrow, he is a talented, socially-aware leader who has been provided with 100% financial support to study at the Tec.

He is also a School of Engineering and Sciences Storyteller for the south central region, which has allowed him to showcase the best of the Tec and to be an internal and external ambassador for the institution.

“Storytellers is very important because you can develop your own professional and interpersonal profile by going to different events in so many areas.”

Diego also participates in the Industrial and Systems Engineering Student Society (SEIIS), where he has organized social integration and academic activities for students studying his course.

He is also vice president of the Mexican and International Friends (AMI) group, a student group that works as a link between international and Mexican students, organizing activities and trips during the semester.

“Each semester, we receive more than 90 students from 25 different countries, which makes it an extremely valuable and impressive cultural experience.”

Diego has also had the opportunity to represent the Tec at important national and international robotics competitions.

He participated in the 2022 national robotics event in Chiapas and in the international championship in León, Guanajuato, where he was able to demonstrate his skills in the construction, design, and management of robots as part of the VORTEX team.

“Participating as part of Vortex has given me the opportunity to learn about different branches of robotics. I’ve been able to share what I’ve learned with students on a national level but more importantly, it allowed me to get to know my teammates and become best friends with them.”

Finally, Diego will have the opportunity to carry out a Tec de Monterrey academic exchange at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland, one of the most important science and technology universities in Europe according to its QS ranking.

He will focus on learning advanced data analysis techniques and machine learning during his stay at a university ranked among the top 10 in the world in his field.
