TM Racing, a team made up of students from the Tecnológico de Monterrey, has claimed third place in the 26th Formula Student UK competition.

This event is organized by the UK Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), which is considered the most prestigious motorsport competition for students in the world and takes place at the iconic Silverstone circuit.

TM Racing, in addition to proudly representing Tec de Monterrey, also represented Mexico and participated in the competition for the sixth time.

This team includes more than 80 students from different campuses and programs, including engineering and other bachelor’s degrees.

The winners shared that, throughout the year, they work hard to design, build, and perfect a formula-style racing car. This process included not only technical engineering but also logistics, costs, and marketing.

TM Racing was conceived as a comprehensive training space for the next generation of motorsports professionals.

“It’s amazing how the team can unite people from different backgrounds and degrees with the shared goal of putting Mexico at the top. “At the end, we aren’t just colleagues, we’re a family,” said TM Racing member Damaris Guadarrama.

Community spirit and collaboration has been essential to the team’s success, who also demonstrated their ability to stand out in an competitive international environment.

According to the students, Formula Student provides a unique opportunity to test their technical skills alongside industry professionals.

It also provided the opportunity for students to interact with automotive industry leaders such as the Mercedes AMG-Petronas F1 Team, Aston Martin F1, and Bentley.

“These meetings allow participants to speak with talent recruiters, establish valuable connections, and explore career opportunities in the world of motorsports,” Damaris said.

Beating 34 universities from around the world

This year, TM Racing participated in the Concept Class category, which evaluates aspects such as engineering design, costs and manufacturing, lap time simulation, and presentation of the business plan.

The Mexican team claimed third place, beating 34 universities from around the world, including the University of Hong Kong and Queen Mary University of London.

What is key to success in this competition is justifying every technical and strategic decision related to this season’s car, the TMR-24, as well as effective synchronization of information and teamwork.

“It’s important to note that when you’re building a racing car, nobody teaches you how to do it; it’s been a process of trial and error. What we presented is not just the result of one year, but the fruit of progress accumulated by many cohorts.

“We’ve been able to build and improve continuously, which has allowed us to be on the podium in recent years and prepare our transition to the FS Class category, where we will present our finished car,” explained Manuela Sepúlveda.

They are currently looking for sponsors and partners who wish to support the growth of the project.

This year, a particularly notable achievement was the inclusion of student members from the Toluca, Santa Fe, Querétaro, and State of Mexico campuses in the group that attended the competition.

The team of 15 students were responsible for presenting the work of the more than 75 classmates that make up TM Racing at these four campuses, which was a source of great pride for all of them.

This team has consolidated its position as a leader in student motorsports with its third-place win and has raised Mexico’s prestige on the international scene.

The team wants to use this achievement to demonstrate the teamwork and innovation that characterize TM Racing, and to inspire future members to continue improving and reach new goals in motorsport.
