The national dean of the Tec’s School of Engineering and Sciences, Feniosky Peña-Mora, has been designated president of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
The ASCE is the oldest civil engineering society in the U.S. (founded in 1852), which represents more than 160,000 civil engineers in 177 countries. It is the world’s largest civil engineering publisher, and an authoritative source for drafting public plans and regulations.
Peña Mora, who is also Executive Vice President of Research at Tec de Monterrey, has been a member of the ASCE since 1990; he was elected president for the 2024-2025 period by the organization’s members, becoming the first Latino to hold the role.
“Receiving the presidential pin and gavel motivates me to keep working for our communities and for the future of civil engineering,” said Peña-Mora on his social media.
Prior to this appointment, the civil engineer formed part of the ASCE’s Board of Direction, as director general, from 2019 to 2022. He also directed development of the organization’s strategic plan as Chair of the Board Strategy Advisory Committee.
Peña Mora says that, through the ASCE, he has worked to project how urban environments will be in the coming decades and how civil engineering can lead that transformation.
“We need to inspire the next generation of engineers. When you’re trying to hire people in this very competitive and difficult world, where you’re fighting for talent, do you really want to talk to young people about the possibility of joining your company because you’re going to build the next bridge, or do you want to talk about how you’re going to build a city of the future?”
