For the third year running, Tec de Monterrey will be the only Mexican institution to take part in 2023 as official nominator for The Earthshot Prize, an award given by The Royal Foundation of the Prince and Princess of Wales.

This award aims to recognize initiatives that propose solutions to the planet’s environmental problems.

In this way, the Tec will join more than 300 organizations from around the world which have been invited to submit nominations.

This award provides an opportunity for the world to benefit from environmental projects developed by brilliant minds with an innovative spirit, said Luis Fernández Carril, Sustainability and Climate Change coordinator at the Tec.

“At the Tec, we’re committed to promoting actions that ensure sustainability. It’s important that international foundations and organizations, and even individuals, come together to join the search for solutions to the great environmental challenges”, said Fernández.

Environmental initiatives

This contest looks for solutions that make tangible progress toward each of the five “Earthshots” or categories:

  1. Protect and restore nature.
  2. Clean our air.
  3. Revive our oceans.
  4. Build a waste-free world.
  5. Fix our climate.

Once nominations are submitted, they undergo a rigorous evaluation process that culminates in the Earthshot Prize Council selecting five winners.

Each winner receives a unique prize and a grant of 1 million British pounds, around 24 million pesos, to increase their project’s impact.

Finalists and winners will also receive access to a platform through which they can expand their work, as well as receiving personalized support from the Earthshot Prize and its network of NGOs, companies, governments, funding bodies, and expert mentors.

Nominated projects must provide solutions to environmental issues.
Los proyectos deben ser iniciativas que aporten soluciones al medio ambiente.

How can you participate in the 2023 contest?

Projects participating in the 2023 contest must be beyond the idea phase, have tested their solution in the field or with their target audience, and reach an expansion “tipping point” within the next 5 years.

Projects must meet the following general requirements:

  1. It’s more than just an idea; it must include proof that the concept works.
  2. The vision must be both replicable and scalable.
  3. It must relate directly to the SDGs.

If you have an initiative that meets the above requirements, you should contact Luis Fernández Carril (lfernandezcarril@tec.mx) and submit your information via the registration form.

The submission window closes on January 13, 2023.

The Royal Foundation

The Royal Foundation brings together leaders, companies, and individuals to find solutions to society’s biggest challenges.

It is led by Prince William and Princess Catherine. Their work is focused on developing world-class research and long-term partnerships, which have both measurable and scalable impacts.

William has led the work to create lasting change by stopping the illegal wildlife trade, addressing mental health issues, supporting the emergency services, and leading a search for solutions to save the planet through the Earthshot Prize.

The award formally became an independent charity after two highly successful years as part of The Royal Foundation.

The Earthshot Prize and The Royal Foundation continue to work closely together, with Prince William, who founded the prize in 2020, taking on the role of President.
