Tecnológico de Monterrey has welcomed the 9th Generation of the Leaders of Tomorrow program, which awards full scholarships to talented young people to study for a degree at the institution.

There are 200 young people in this generation, bringing the nine generations of Leaders of Tomorrow to a total of 1,728.

Jose Antonio Fernández, Chairman of the Board at Tecnológico de Monterrey, welcomed the young people and invited the entire Tec community to develop a spirit of philanthropy.

Philanthropy is the best way to help our country (...) it’s proven that creating opportunities is the best way to practice philanthropy. You’re an example of this,” said Fernández.

The ceremony was held at the Monterrey Campus Conference Center on August 8, 2022, where the opening call for the 2023 Leaders of Tomorrow was also announced.

The 9th Generation of the Leaders of Tomorrow

This generation is made up of 110 women and 90 men, one of them coming from the Dominican Republic after the call was extended to eight Latin American countries.

This year’s call was extended to young people from Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, and the Dominican Republic.

The degrees most in demand by the young people in this generation are:

  • Computer Technology Engineering
  • Business
  • Mechatronics Engineering
  • Doctor of Medicine
  • Degree in Financial Management
  • Biomedical Engineering

What’s more, the campuses receiving the most young people benefiting from the program are: Monterrey, with 47; Mexico City, with 18; Puebla, with 17; Guadalajara, with 16; Queretaro, with 15; and Chihuahua, with 14.

“I feel very proud of the 9th Generation of LDM (Leaders of Tomorrow). They bring hope for our country, an enormous opportunity for change and transformation. These young people motivate you with their positive energy and transformative projects,” said Laura Ruiz, National Director of the Leaders of Tomorrow Program.

A generation destined to solve the world’s problems

In his message to these young people, Fernández talked about how the challenges that humanity faces, such as global warming, economic crises, geopolitical tensions, and the COVID pandemic, can be seen as opportunities to find solutions.

“All those problems become opportunities when there is knowledge and people like you who dedicate themselves to finding solutions,” said Fernández.

“We all have the obligation to take responsibility for our actions and be very responsible in seeking to transform our environment,” he added.

Also addressing these young people was businessman Leopoldo Cedillo, General Director of Proeza and Chairman of the Board for the School of Engineering and Sciences, as well as a member of the Academic and Research Board and sponsor of the 9th Generation of LDM.

“You promise hope for Mexico. When I talk about breaking that promise, I don’t mean getting to the Tec. That’s a great achievement. The objective is to set good goals and achieve them; goals that will create a better world for all and allow us to be happy as we are doing it,” said the sponsor of this generation.

Cedillo, who is also a Tec graduate, advised the young people to use their time at university to develop four cross-cutting skills:

  • Learning ability
  • Problem solving
  • Social skills
  • Ethics

“My dear Leaders of Tomorrow: never forget where you come from, thank those who made it possible for you to be here today; give back and multiply this opportunity,” said Cedillo, who also said that he was also awarded a scholarship during his time as a student.

“A social mobility platform”

Cedillo highlighted the potential that the Leaders of Tomorrow program can have to make an impact on the lives of the young beneficiaries.

“Today, I can’t find a better social mobility platform than Leaders of Tomorrow,” said Cedillo.

“On the one hand, we have people with great leadership potential and commitment to the community, and on the other, the best private university in Mexico with a well-designed program to address the challenges you will face in your training and in your first years as professionals,” he said.

Graduates of this program can move up six deciles in distribution of earnings in relation to where they started.

The reciprocity of the students is reflected through the “Leader to Leader” scholarship, since they themselves are the ones who give scholarships to other students. Today, eight students have been awarded this support.

The outstanding impact of donors and relatives

David Garza, Rector and Executive President of the Tec, highlighted the role played by the donors of the Leaders of Tomorrow program in transforming the lives of these young beneficiaries.

“I want to thank and congratulate the sponsor of this Generation, Leopoldo Cedillo. We’re very proud of him as a Tec graduate, as director of a company such as Proeza, for his humility, compassion, and generosity,” said Garza.

“Also, thanks to all the donors; without a doubt, the success stories that we’ve been seeing since the first generation of graduates are thanks to you,” he said.

The rector also recognized the role of relatives, friends, and people who have been fundamental in the development of the 9th Generation.

“We want to thank them for everything they’ve done; what they’ve achieved is also due to what you’ve taught to them,” added the Rector of the Tec.

“To the benefactors, I have excellent news for you: it’s scientifically proven that generosity generates happiness. If we want to be happier, we must continue supporting the Leaders of Tomorrow, until it hurts, as Mother Teresa of Calcutta would say,” said Cedillo.
