Tec de Monterrey is committing to innovation by urging its students to make intelligent, careful use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT to take advantage of opportunities and tackle challenges.

In an official statement, Juan Pablo Murra, Rector for Higher Education, and Paulina Campos, Vice President of Integrity and Compliance, pointed out that using AI means new challenges for education, such as finding ways to use it responsibly and ethically.

The executives said that even though these tools may provide opportunities that benefit the teaching-learning process, academic training should not simply focus on how to make the most of them, but also on the commitment to use them ethically.

The institution asked students to consult their professors on the correct way to use this technology and to report back and give examples of how ChatGPT or any other AI is being used to do academic work.

ChatGPT, launched in late 2022 by the OpenAI organization, is a chatbot designed to hold conversations with people, answer questions to explain a topic, write readable texts and essays, and produce programming code, among other things.

Taking care of academic integrity

The institution reminded students that it possesses constantly updated regulations as well as tools and monitoring processes to minimize academic misconduct and prevent plagiarism.

The statement informs students, “Under no circumstances must you submit, in whole or in part, the work of someone else or an artificial intelligence tool as your own.”

Students were also reminded that AI technologies may have inaccuracies and should not be considered an entirely reliable source of information.

They were asked to clear up any doubts with their professors and get solid advice on how to use these tools appropriately.

In this way, the Tec reaffirmed its commitment to train honest, responsible professionals and underscored the importance of reflecting on the challenges that come with using these technologies.

Academic integrity and the use of artificial intelligence (AI)

Dear Tec community

At Tecnológico de Monterrey, we are aware of the importance of reflecting on technological advances and innovations that open up possibilities and pose challenges to our educational, research, and collaboration processes.

Such is the case of the development of artificial intelligence tools like CHATGPT, which was launched in late 2022. This chatbot is designed to hold conversations with people, answer questions to explain a topic, write readable texts and essays of a certain quality, and produce programming code, among other things.

As an educational institution committed to innovation, we see these tools as an opportunity to benefit teaching-learning processes and we are working with different areas of the institution to explore the best ways or alternatives of making proper use of them in education. This is being done with a view to mentoring the educational experience in the classroom, outside the classroom, and during professional development.

However, these opportunities are fraught with significant challenges, since academic training is not only focused on technical skills and getting the most from tools and their possibilities, but also on the commitment made by each and every one of our students to use these tools ethically. Given our commitment to training honest, responsible professionals, we possess constantly updated regulations together with tools and processes that support our professors when evaluating students, which allows us to minimize academic misconduct and prevent plagiarism (mitec >> Services >> Regulations). Your work and commitment as students and parents is paramount to our honest development within a framework of academic integrity.

As happens with all new technology, we will learn about and assess the implications and uses of artificial intelligence. For the time being, and in support of our educational models, we would like to ask our students to:

  • Consult your professors on the correct way to use this technology and incorporate it ethically into your teaching-learning experience.

  • Report back and give examples of how ChatGPT or any other artificial intelligence system is being used to do academic work. Under no circumstances must you submit, in whole or in part, the work of someone else or an artificial intelligence tool as your own.

  • Remember that AI technologies may have inaccuracies and should not be considered an entirely reliable source of information.

  • Consult your professors, who will guide you regarding how to use these tools appropriately.

Technological innovation is an essential part of our educational models, which is why we constantly seek to discuss new technologies and tools with you. At the same time, it is important to reflect on the challenges that come with them to be able to train integral professionals capable of transforming the future with integrity and responsibility.
