Korean ambassador learns about Tec’s educational technology

Ambassador of the Republic of Korea in Mexico Suh Jeong-in learned about some of Tec de Monterrey’s educational innovation projects during his visit to the Monterrey campus.

“I’ve been impressed by what they’ve shown me. We have some catching up to do,” said the diplomat about the educational technologies being implemented at the Tec.

David Garza Salazar, Rector and President of Tec de Monterrey, accompanied the diplomat on his visit to the campus and discussed the institution’s interest in conducting research with Korean universities, as well as further promoting academic exchanges and educational innovation.

The educational technologies presented to the ambassador included virtual reality devices, the system for hybrid classes, and blockchain.

Conducting research with Korean universities

During the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea’s visit, Tec Rector David Garza discussed Tec de Monterrey’s interest in the possibility of greater collaboration on research with Korean universities.

“Although we haven’t yet forged strong connections with Korean universities in the area of research, we’re interested in doing so, especially in areas such as data science or cybersecurity,” he emphasized.

Garza, who is also president of the Tec, highlighted that the institution is a member of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU), which also includes those Korean universities it hopes to collaborate with.

Taking its first steps in the area of research, the Tec recently signed a collaboration agreement through TecSalud with the Korean company NovocellBio to transfer technology and jointly develop a cell therapy for SARS-CoV-2.

The ambassador was open to the idea of supporting the Tec’s collaboration with Korean companies such as Samsung.

Furthering academic exchange

During his visit to the Monterrey campus, Suh Jeong-in also emphasized that more than 800 Korean students have come on exchanges to study at the Tec since 2012. He pointed out that there could be more in the years to come.

In the area of academic exchange, those Korean institutions with which the Tec collaborates with the most are Chung-Ang University, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, and Kyung Hee University.

Suh Jeong-in’s visit to the Monterrey campus took place on September 29. He visited Mostla, the Tec’s area for Emerging Educational Technologies, where he learned about some of the educational technologies being implemented at Tec de Monterrey.

Examples of these included virtual reality devices, the system for hybrid classes, and blockchain, the latter of which facilitates authentication of academic documents.

The ambassador was accompanied by Gregorio Canales Zambrano, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Korea in Monterrey; Hong Soyoun, political affairs secretary; Eom Jae Young, commercial attaché; and Paolo Rosano, economic affairs advisor.

Representing the Tec were Juan Pablo Murra, Rector of Undergraduate Studies; Raúl Rodríguez, Vice President for International Affairs; Hugo Garza, Vice President for Strategic Affairs; Rodolfo Rubio, Vice President for Marketing, Communications, and Outreach; and Mario Adrián Flores Castro, Vice President for the Monterrey Region.
