The president of the Board of Directors of the Tec, José Antonio Fernández, has urged Tec de Monterrey directors to redouble their efforts to promote the institution and social development both in the country and in the world.

“I dream of a bold, optimistic Tec focused on a more humane future,” he said at the Tec’s 2020 Board of Directors Meeting.

“A Tec where diversity is the driver, open to social mobility, ideas and talent from around the world. A place where we promote the growth and wellbeing of our community,” he added.

Fernández explained that trust indexes still place universities in a privileged position and expressed that this is a great responsibility.

“What can we do personally to be a positive force for change in our role at the Tec and in our organizations?”, he asked.

“There are great expectations of us, and we have a great deal of responsibility towards our beloved Mexico. Let’s fulfill those expectations.”

ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE TEC AND RECOGNITION OF SALVADOR ALVA

Fernández recalled some of the achievements that the institution has made in recent years, particularly during the last 8 years, when Salvador Alva was its president, and who leaves office in June.

Fernandez stressed that the Tec’s achievements include:

  • Greater social inclusion. He highlighted, for example, the Leaders of Tomorrow program, which grants 100% scholarships to highly talented young people from low income socioeconomic levels.
  • Educational Quality. He mentioned how, according to QS, the institution has climbed more than 200 places in world rankings over the past decade, to become today the 158th university in the world and the 29th private university in the world.
  • Educational Innovation.  He emphasized the importance of the new TEC21 Model educational model, which is already in full operation and will prepare new generations for the future.
  • Tecmilenio and TecSalud Impact. He stressed how Tecmilenio continues to grow and is now recognized worldwide as the “first positive university in the world” and how TecSalud has enabled the Tec has become the only private university functioning as an academic medical center.

He also explained that all Tec institutions will implement actions in accordance with their 2030 vision: “Leadership, innovation and entrepreneurship for human flourishing.”

“Salvador, for all these achievements (…) a huge thanks and acknowledgement to you and the management team that accompanied you (…) We have been extremely fortunate to have had your encouragement and visionary leadership,” he told Alva.

CHALLENGES FOR THE FUTURE

José Antonio Fernández explained that the current rector David Garza, following a transition planned years ago, had been chosen to be the new president of the Tec from July.

“Now the baton will be carried in July by a great leader, David Garza Salazar, who is loved, valued and respected within and without our community, who will continue to strengthen the Tec’s vision.”

He pointed out that the challenge facing Garza is to continue developing a Tec that is successful and productive for society.

“It’s clear that what we have been doing will not be sufficient. Simply doing a little more or doing the same thing better won’t create the solutions we’ll be needing,” said Fernández.

“Leaders like those of us here, are going to have to present our most innovative, conscientious, supportive and courageous sides,” he urged.
