To promote research and innovation in science and technology in the agri-food sector, the Tec has joined the first Biotechnological Entrepreneurship Hub in Jalisco.

The project will generate knowledge focused on solving scientific, technological and innovation challenges within the industry.

This initiative is supported by the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT) and the Jalisco State Government through the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology (SICyT),

Also involved are the State of Jalisco’s Center for Research and Assistance in Technology and Design (CIATEJ) and Tec de Monterrey, as well as other institutions.

At the project launch, Enrique Alfaro Ramírez, Governor of Jalisco, stated that:

“The Biotechnological Hub is the sum of efforts and connections between the government, private initiatives, universities, researchers, and entrepreneurs.”

He stressed that it is part of a new drive to advance in entrepreneurship and technology transfer issues related to bio-entrepreneurship.

“It will be a vehicle to move local talent, especially young entrepreneurs, from ideas to projects, to market applications.”

Alfonso Pompa Padilla, Minister of the Jalisco SICyT, mentioned that:

“The success of the Hub lies in effective connections between the manufacturing sector, research centers, and universities to invest in specific projects.”

He added that it is an entrepreneurial ecosystem at the highest level of science and technology. “It will work with some of the main universities in the state...

Such as Tec de Monterrey, with its entrepreneurial and innovation capacities, coordinated by the most recognized research center in the region”.

Manuel Zertuche Guerra, Dean of the School of Engineering and Sciences at Tec de Monterrey, said “we are pleased to be partners in this initiative…

At the Tec, we have a long history and experience of bringing together research, innovation, and entrepreneurship communities, which we gladly put at the service of this project.”

For the Tec, the Hub will be a space which encourages creativity and ideas to develop new proposals for solutions to the challenges faced by society.

It will be a vehicle to move local talent, especially young entrepreneurs, from ideas to projects, to market applications, and real and practical solutions.”

In addition to the Tec, other participating institutions are:

  • The Autonomous University of Guadalajara (UAG),
  • The University of Guadalajara (UdeG), and
  • The Western Institute of Technological and Higher Education (ITESO).

These institutions will make their scientific and technological capabilities available to the Hub through laboratories and pilot plants which will develop new agri-food products.

As a result of this project, Jalisco is expected to become the capital of agri-food bio-entrepreneurship in Mexico.

It will therefore have an incubator and accelerator for biotechnology companies, as well as an office for intellectual property and technology transfer.

Additionally, the Bio-Entrepreneurship Hub will bring together the Jalisco agri-food cluster, where companies from this sector will have access to different resources.
