Car accidents due to damaged roads or industrial accidents due to failure control flaws could be a thing of the past thanks to Tecnológico de Monterrey researchers who have created smart shock absorber and surveillance systems.

According to the WHO, over 2% of world deaths are related to car accidents caused by drivers losing control at high speeds over rough roads. These accidents could be avoided by an automatic monitoring and diagnostic of mechanical system malfunction.
Tecnológico de Monterrey Campus Automotive Mechatronics Research Chair professor Rubén Morales, PhD., is developing a Failure-Tolerant Control System to diagnose car shock absorber malfunction and automatically take corrective action to avoid potential accidents.
The project is being carried out jointly with Ciudad de México Campus professor Ricardo Ramírez, PhD., and graduate students and researchers from the Monterrey Campus and Grenoble, France's Institut Nationale Polytechnique.
"The shocks absorb a road's imperfections (potholes, etc.) and stop them from reaching the rest of the car, including the driver and passengers. We're using electro-rheological shock absorbers, known as smart shock absorbers, because they change their dynamic behavior in response to an electrical charge variation," Dr. Morales stated.
He mentioned that, in addition, 70% of all industrial accidents are linked to human error, and that this Failure-Tolerant Control System could be applied to other industrial settings and processes, and curb accident rates.
"In view of the steep global costs of catastrophes and accidents in industrial processes, we are designing better, scientific method-based monitoring systems," he said.
