The Eduardo Garza T. Innovation and Entrepreneurship HUB is a space to facilitate interaction and connectivity
“I hope that all the young people who come through these doors find the inspiration to dream big, create solutions to our society’s challenges, and become agents of change that lead Mexico to a fairer, more prosperous, and more competitive future.”
With these words, donor Eduardo Garza T., honorary president of Frisa Industrías, inaugurated the Innovation and Entrepreneurship HUB, a building bearing his name in the Monterrey Innovation District.
This site located on Monterrey campus brings together science, industry, and startups in a space that facilitates interaction and connection, as well as fostering education, healthcare, and sustainability.
“It’s a space where ideas flourish, innovation is encouraged, and entrepreneurship is promoted, creating projects that transform lives and contribute to our country’s development,” added the Innovation and Entrepreneurship HUB donor.
On the esplanade of the new Innovation and Entrepreneurship HUB, Ricardo Saldívar, Chairman of the Board of the Tecnológico de Monterrey Education Group, mentioned that solutions to major challenges will be found in this space.
“In this space, we seek to promote science- and technology-based innovation as an instrument for creating solutions to major human challenges and boosting Mexico’s economic and social development.
“This HUB was set up as a platform for new opportunities that invite us to collaborate with new partners and enable us to gain unprecedented reach,” he said.
For his part, David Garza, Executive President of the Tecnológico de Monterrey Education Group, explained that this HUB will be an entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem.
“What we want is to foster an ecosystem. It’s not just an incubator, it’s not just an accelerator, it’s not just a space for connection, but somewhere for all these elements to come together in one place.
“We have a space where research is conducted, which is Expedition FEMSA, but there’s another place where all these things in the laboratories can be taken from the lab to the market, and that’s the opportunity given to us by this Eduardo Garza T. Innovation and Entrepreneurship HUB,” he said.
Javier Guzmán, the Education Group’s Vice President of Research, explained that the aim beyond the physical space “is an innovation ecosystem designed to connect university talent with the commercialization of new ideas that generate jobs and transformation of the country and the world.”
What’s more, he said that the major challenges we face today in terms of healthcare, sustainability, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and manufacturing will not be solved by a single institution.
“These challenges will be solved by collaboration, innovation, and entrepreneurship. To make all of this happen, we need infrastructure that makes this possible and this HUB was built precisely for that,” he added.
Representatives of academia, industry, entrepreneurs, investors, and facilitators used a device that illuminated the first stone laid the previous year to activate the threshold and open the HUB doors.
Rector talks to entrepreneurs
During the inauguration, Rector of Tec de Monterrey Juan Pablo Murra moderated a panel of entrepreneurs who agreed that the HUB should be a place for making connections with clients, investors, talent (students), and entrepreneurs themselves.
“Today, we’ll be talking about spaces, capacities, laboratories, and collaboration. However, at the end of the day, an innovation ecosystem makes sense for the people within it due to the ideas that help them discover where to start and the people who decide to build because they connect knowledge with action,” said Murra.
The panel consisted of:
- Marco López, business owner and director of Bnext
- Dan Cabral, co-founder of biotechnology startup XiA’H
- Manuel Vallejos, founder and CEO of Chilean startup AIndez
The three panelists mentioned how important it was to have a collaborative ecosystem when starting a business.
“It’s precisely about experiencing what isn’t written in a scientific paper, what isn’t limited to the knowledge we’re picking up as students and can be applied,” said Dan, a medical student from Monterrey campus.
The Eduardo Garza T. Innovation and Entrepreneurship HUB
It is a space occupying 8,300 square meters distributed over four floors, designed for interaction and connection between the different levels and areas.
The Eduardo Garza T. Innovation and Entrepreneurship HUB has the following spaces:
- For events: master stage, multi-purpose room, innovation plaza
- For connection: food area, roof garden, experimental gallery
- For creation: prototyping lab, bioworkshop, hangars
- For work: startup garages, co-working space for startups, the commons
The services provided by the Eduardo Garza T. Innovation and Entrepreneurship HUB include the following:
- Service to develop new solutions and connections
- Focus on science- and technology-based startups and scaleups
- Access to external audiences
The Eduardo Garza T. Innovation and Entrepreneurship HUB is a space that is not only open to entrepreneurs from the Tec community but is also available to innovators from other universities.
Located next to the Expedition FEMSA building, its entrance is on Av. Fernando García Roel.
After the inauguration, which was on May 26, attendees were given a guided tour of this new building’s installations.
