TecSalud ENT specialist to represent Mexico in global study

Ricardo de Hoyos, a pediatric ENT specialist at TecSalud, has been selected to represent Mexico in an international research study focused on the study of tonsillectomies in children.

Led by the Global OHNS Initiative, an academic network dedicated to ENT research, the study aims to generate evidence that contributes to increasing knowledge about these procedures and strengthening pediatric medical care.

“As the national leader of the project, one of my main tasks will be to coordinate data collection from participating centers in Mexico for international analysis,” the specialist explained.

A common procedure with a big impact on children’s health

According to Hoyos, a tonsillectomy is a surgical procedure that consists of removing the tonsils.

“For years, surgery was performed due to repeated infections. However, one of the most frequent causes is the excessive growth of tonsillar tissue and obstruction of the airways”.

He pointed out that tonsil problems can lead to sleep apnea, fatigue, and attention difficulties, and can even cause alterations in children’s dental development, thereby affecting their wellbeing and quality of life.

“Due to its frequency and clinical importance among the pediatric population, this procedure was selected as the central focus of the study entitled OtoSurg 1,” he added.

Research to understand tonsillectomies

The specialist explained that OtoSurg 1 aims to understand how pediatric tonsillectomies are performed in different health systems around the world.

This research will gather information from nearly 60 countries to analyze patient characteristics, surgical processes, and care approaches used in different regions.

The study will also allow researchers to explore how clinical, geographical, environmental, and cultural factors may influence the frequency of these conditions and the medical decisions that affect their treatment.

“This allows us to identify patterns, compare medical practices, and generate scientific evidence that will contribute to improving the quality of care for pediatric patients,” the specialist said.

The Mexican contribution

Participation by Mexican medical centers will allow the country to contribute key information to this international effort and, at the same time, build a national database about this pediatric surgery.

“In addition to understanding the main characteristics of Mexican patients, the information will help identify waiting times, predominant symptoms, and differences in comparison with other regions of the world,” the doctor emphasized.

The results will generate a better understanding of the realities of Mexican patients and will provide useful evidence for future research and care strategies.

Participating in OtoSurg 1 represents a professional achievement for Ricardo de Hoyos that goes beyond individual success.

“My participation reflects TecSalud’s commitment to generating scientific knowledge and using it as a tool to strengthen clinical practice and contribute to better patient care,” he said.

But beyond that, he noted that he would like the legacy of this project to demonstrate that there is the talent, clinical experience, and research capacity within Mexico to actively contribute to global-level research.

“We need more collaborative spaces like OtoSurg 1, which show how multinational work can drive advances in medicine for a field as important as pediatrics,” he concluded.
